Maintain Habits

What we are willing to do to maintain our habits...

Habits are such profound routines in our daily living that we will do allmost anything to uphold these habits. They are the foundation upon which we act our daily life and it makes us able to meet lifes challenges without us getting stressed or disturbed by its attempt to shake our stability.

Habits can be both good and bad, but as long as they serve us good they will help us keep a stable foundation where we can develop ourselves and manage daily life. At some point in life our habits need to change because we have visions that call for change in our life. To make this change we have to let go of old habits.

Today I met a man whos foundation was about to crumble. He was not ready for change. I was at my favourite café maintaining one of my good habits that helps me writing my book. A man in front of me just ordered a cup of coffee and asked for the newspapers. The newspapers are always there on their respective hangers, but today the man just stared at the empty hangers with wide open eyes and great worry. The barista informed him that the papers had been misdelivered and were resting in the neighbouring yard behind a steel gate with a secure lock on it.

While the barista was serving the worried customer, he made a few inquiries about the gate and the attached fence. After some thinking he steered out the door with a determined look. This man was not to let his habits break just because of a fence. He disappeared around the corner and a few minutes later he came back with the papers. The barista was surprised that he had managed to climb the fence. The customer did not even look happy nor did he triumph... he just seemed concentrated and a bit shaken. This was a man that needed his paper, it was not there and now he had put things right.

It is interesting how important those small things in our daily routines are. If they go wrong they can ruin the whole day or at least shake our concentration enough to make bad decisions or help our day to be one of those days we wish we stayed in bed. How far would you go to maintain your habits?
